The Difference Between a Casting Director and a Talent Agency
At Aura Casting in the San Francisco Bay Area, we often hear confusion about the difference between a casting director and a talent agency. We’re here to break it down.
What Does a Casting Director Do?
A casting director is hired by a production company, brand, or creative team to find the right talent for a project. This can include commercials, films, TV shows, print campaigns, social media content, live events, and more. Once brought on, the casting director typically works on a flat fee and partners with the client to bring their creative vision to life. They source and evaluate talent, curate a shortlist, and present options in a casting deck. From there, they help guide the client through final casting decisions as needed.
What Does a Talent Agent Do?
A talent agent represents actors, models, and other performers, helping them secure work and build long-term careers. They submit their clients to casting opportunities, negotiate contracts and rates, and provide guidance on portfolio development and career strategy. Talent agents also maintain strong relationships with casting directors and other industry professionals. For each project booked, talent agencies earn a commission.
Key Difference Between Casting Directors and Talent Agencies
The easiest way to understand the difference is this:
Casting directors are hired by companies to find talent.
Talent agencies represent talent to get them hired.
