When producers think about casting, they usually picture a camera, lights, and an actor hitting their mark. But at Aura Casting, some of our most creative work happens off-camera. Voiceover casting is its own art form, and it takes a special kind of performance to make a character come to life through sound alone.

We’ve cast for brands like Hawaiian Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Stanford Research Institute, and several animated short films. Each one reminded us that finding the right voice is about much more than tone or accent. It’s about personality, rhythm, and authenticity.

One of the biggest surprises for new producers is just how much volume it takes to find the perfect voice. You can easily listen to hundreds of auditions before you hear the one that makes you stop and say, “That’s it.” The smallest shift in pacing or emphasis can completely change how a script feels.

Voiceover casting also draws from a totally different pool of performers. These actors often work exclusively in VO and are represented by specialized agencies. We connect through different casting platforms and VO-specific networks to find the right fit for each role. It’s a space full of incredibly skilled artists who can take direction through a few short lines and bring an entire world to life.

What makes a standout VO audition? For us, it starts with understanding the script and tone. The best talent know exactly when to pause, when to let a moment breathe, and which words to emphasize to create emotion. Nervous reads tend to rush through, and you can hear it instantly. The pacing feels off. Great performers take their time and trust the material.

When a producer sends us a VO brief, we look at the project like it’s a mini movie. What’s the story? What emotion should the listener walk away with? Is this character trustworthy, mischievous, warm, or wise? That creative direction guides every decision, from which voices we invite to audition to how we interpret their reads.

Voiceover casting is where nuance and instinct meet. You might have a clear idea of the voice you want, but once you start listening, something unexpected can capture your attention. That’s the fun of it. The right voice doesn’t just read the lines, it makes people lean in and listen.
