Lights! Camera! … Background? A Look Into Why Background Acting Can Help You Get Your Start
Our Casting Assistant, June Hauser, in the fourth season of Stranger Things
Did you know that our Casting Assistant, June Hauser, appeared in three seasons of Stranger Things?
Yep! It’s actually how she got her start in the industry. At just 15 years old, June applied to a general casting call for background extras for the third season of Stranger Things. Nearly a year later, she found out she’d been booked for the carnival scene! After two long drives to Georgia and an experience of a lifetime, June realized her love for the film industry. She knew she loved actors, but didn’t want to be one herself. She loved the production side, but didn’t want to work on set. That led her to casting, and nearly eight years later, here she is!
What is Background Actor?
A background actor, also known as an extra, is a performer in film, television, theater, or commercials who plays a non-speaking role. They appear in the background of scenes to add realism and atmosphere, helping create believable environments like busy city streets, restaurants, or large events. Background actors are guided by assistant directors on where to move and what actions to perform during a scene. Most background work is general, meaning you may appear briefly or out of focus, but some roles are featured, placing you clearly on camera. No matter the role, background actors are essential to productions and play a huge part in bringing scenes to life.
Why Do Background Acting?
Background acting is an entry level way to break into the entertainment industry. Little to no prior training is usually required (unless it’s a specialty role), and it’s paid. It’s a great opportunity to get on a professional set and start gaining hands-on experience. As a background actor, you get a behind the scenes look at how a production runs. You’ll interact with departments like hair, makeup, and wardrobe who help get you camera ready before you step on set. You can observe how directors work with talent, see how camera and grip departments collaborate, and pick up essential on-set terminology along the way. If you’re unsure which area of the entertainment industry you want to pursue, background work offers a valuable glimpse into how different departments function and work together on set.
Where to Find Background Casting Calls
Finding background casting calls is usually pretty straightforward, depending on the city you’re in. Start by doing a Google search for extras casting companies in your area. Most of these companies use Facebook to post their casting calls, so once you find their websites, be sure to follow them on social media. Some casting companies require you to create a profile in their database, so take the time to do that and use clear, up to date photos in your profile and submissions. In some cases, casting may reach out to you directly based on your profile. Other times, calls are posted publicly on their Facebook or other social platforms, along with instructions on how to submit if you fit the required specs. Make sure to follow all of their posted instructions for submissions. If you are booked, you will usually be reached out to via text or email.
