Casting for Still Photography vs. Video: What Producers Should Know
Production: Seamless Content Co
Aura Casting works across all types of projects, from national commercials to print campaigns and branded content.
We’ve cast for brands like Honda, Starbucks, and several wineries throughout Northern California, and one thing we’ve learned is that casting for still photography and video might look similar, but they require different skills from both talent and producers.
Still photography demands strong posing and physical awareness. It’s about knowing how to hold yourself so that the shot captures both form and feeling in a single frame. Video, on the other hand, needs natural movement. It’s about flow, not stillness. The most successful on-set days are when everyone knows which kind of performance the shoot requires.
Experienced talent usually understand the nuances between the two, but it’s always helpful for producers to clarify expectations early. Is this a stills-only shoot, or will there be motion elements as well? Sometimes projects blend both, which can be great when the photographer and videographer take turns capturing moments instead of overlapping. It keeps the energy balanced and ensures the talent isn’t pulled in too many directions.
When we review submissions, we often look beyond headshots. Someone may have the perfect look for a still campaign but appear too stiff on camera. That’s why we like to share portfolios or previous work with producers so they can visualize how that person will feel in front of a lens.
Still photography and video both require confidence, but the expression of it is different. A photographer might be chasing the perfect expression in a split second, while a director might want to build an emotional arc over time. Casting is about finding someone who can bring that moment to life, whether it’s one frame or thirty seconds.
For producers, the best thing you can do is provide as much detail as possible upfront. Let us know if the project will include both mediums, how long the shoot days are, and what kind of energy the creative team is looking for. The more we understand your vision, the better we can match the right performers.
Aura Casting thrives on versatility. Whether you need talent for still photography, motion, or a combination of both, we’ll help you find people who deliver. Reach out to our casting team to make your next shoot shine, no matter the format.
