At Aura, we understand you may be still buzzing over the Oscars — the wins, the snubs, the best-dressed, and zingiest punchlines. So, you’re still missing award show season? Fear not! This Tuesday April 30th, nominations for the 2024 Tony Awards will be revealed.

The Tony Awards were established in 1947 by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League to honor outstanding achievements in Broadway productions. Named after Antoinette Perry, an actress, director, and co-founder of the American Theatre Wing, the awards recognize excellence in various categories, including Best Musical, Best Play, Best Revival, and individual performances. Over the years, the Tonys have become one of the most prestigious honors in the entertainment industry, celebrating the creativity, talent, and innovation of Broadway theater professionals. The annual Tony Awards ceremony, featuring performances from nominated shows and star-studded presentations, is a highlight of the Broadway season, showcasing theatre to audiences around the world.

Stereophonic on Broadway, 2024

The nominations just came out this past Tuesday, April 30th 2024. Among them, Stereophonic made history by obtaining the most nominations of any play! The new Alicia Keys musical, Hell’s Kitchen, also stood out as a frontrunner with 13 nominations. Other major shows include the eagerly anticipated revivals of Cabaret which transferred from The West End this spring and the late Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along. Perhaps the most exciting event from Tuesday was a record-breaking number of female director nominations! Like many other entertainment award ceremonies, the Tony’s have been lacking in nominations for female directors. However, 7 women were nominated for Best Director this year! Now, that’s worth celebrating.

In sadder news, some fans were disheartened to hear of nomination snubs such as Ingrid Michaelson’s score for The Notebook and Jeremy Jordan’s performance as Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby.
